A Beginner’s Guide to One-Night Stands

Handling an ONS (One Night Stand) correctly can be tricky, particularly when gender and politics are involved. But if you’re looking for a brief encounter, know what you’re getting yourself into and have a clear idea of what you’re aiming to get out of it, then you may want to establish a few general rules of conduct.

  • Take the time to chat with the person you’re hoping to hook up with. At the very least, find out their name. Repeat it at least five times during the night.
  • Establish what you both want out of your encounter. You may not be seeking a long-lasting relationship, but you probably wouldn’t appreciate being thought of as a sex toy either.
  • Take charge of your sexual health by carrying condoms. Don’t make it your ONS’s responsibility. One-night stands are rarely reliable!
  • If you’re going to someone else’s house, be sure you know where you are, including the suburb and street name. Send an SMS to a trusted friend with your location.
  • If you feel uncomfortable with anything, speak up. If your concerns grow, get out of the situation.

All very sensible points - it’s a shame more people don’t stop and take the time to place their safety above their sexuality on their list of priorities.

You have to know the person’s name on a one night stand? Jokes aside, these are very sensible rules. From what I understand, people tend to embark on one night stands without thinking things through so clearly. The idea of SMSing a friend with your location is an especially good one.

These are very sensible points, but I find it rather a shame that we even need them. People do tend to jump into things before thinking them out, and when you are dealing with a “ONS” I just don’t believe there can be enough between two people to make it meaningful.

This sounds like a post for “The Real World” cast. LOL Sadly condoms don’t protect against everything out there these days.
