Alcohol During Pregnancy

The decision to drink alcohol while pregnant is a personal one. Excessive drinking is generally frowned upon and the majority of people accept that there are huge risks involved. There are mixed views about light drinking, however, as some women feel like one drink in the evening is just what they need to relax. The theory behind this being that stress is more harmful to the fetus than a small amount of alcohol. Others argue that any amount of alcohol is dangerous to an unborn child and experts warn that exact knowledge of how harmful certain levels of alcohol is not available because it would be unethical to perform tests like this.

Many doctors advise their patients to abstain fully from drinking alcohol while others say that one unit of alcohol will do no harm. In fact, some doctors still advocate the use of Guinness as an iron supplement during pregnancy. Again, the choice is personal and women are the most knowledgeable of what is best for their own bodies but care should be taken as alcohol can cause significant damage during pregnancy.
