Another Five Tricks for Effective Business Writing
1. It’s All About the Benefits
Features highlight what a product or system has, while benefits tell the reader how these features will help them. Tell your reader how they will benefit from your service or product and you are well on your way to success.
2. Never Forget the Five W’s: Who, What, Where, Why and When
Make sure you tell your reader Who you are, What you have to offer them, Where they can find you or your product, Why they should use your product or service, and When they should do so.
3. Tell the Reader What You Want Them to Do
If your goal is to get a response from your readers, tell them. Do not leave them guessing at what is expected of them. When you tell them what to do, you have a greater chance of making it happen.
4. Use Spell Check Software with Care
Spell check is a great tool, but many choose to rely on it solely to catch their spelling errors. Spell check cannot tell you when a word has been used incorrectly. Often, writers’ misspellings are more a matter of incorrect word usage.
5. Read Your Document Out Loud
Find a quiet place and read your writing out loud. When you read out loud, you will get a sense of what your piece sounds like. In doing so, you will know if the writing will help you accomplish your goals or not.
