Are kids doing too much homework?

This debate has been ongoing for generations. The debate is, when children spend six to seven hours in school, with a couple of breaks and a short lunch, should they bring homework home? Interestingly enough, a Duke University Professor has evidence to the contrary and believes homework is not as helpful as we might have thought. Some other factors to consider are the extra-curricular activities. Are students spending too much time in sports, or dance or other lessons? I think there needs to be a healthy balance between (school) work and play, and if you balance school with outside activities, there should be enough time in school to get your homework done, without brining massive amounts of it home. The important factor is keeping students caught up, rather than playing catch up. Another important factor is; communication. Keep the line of communication open between school and home, so you can stay on top of issues that may arise during the course of the year. Personally, I do not believe a little homework is asking too much. Even though students do spend a large quantity of time in the classroom, it keeps the discipline going even at home. It allows them to focus on something other than television, and gives them something to share with their parents. So the idea is good, and not harmful in the least. I think the question should be how much is too much? As long as your child is keeping up without feeling overwhelmed, then homework is okay. If it ever begins to become a struggle, talk with your child’s teacher and I assure you modifications will be made.
