Art Imitating Life?

For the most part we’re taught that movies are art imitating life. How far do you take this? I must admit that I think most films are far from imitating life. For one thing, you typically have characters speaking in subtext. While we do this in reality at times, most of us ramble about things that have no meaning whatsoever. In fact, some folks are just talking to hear themselves talk. Then there’s the invincibility aspect. We routinely watch protagonists go through ridiculous shoot-outs and empty-hand combat scenes. As if nothing can stop them, regardless of the fact that they’re introduced as a flesh and blood human. Life is absolutely not like this! Having said that, I do realize that movies are mostly for entertainment purposes and watching ordinary people do mundane things may never sell. But, do movies really reflect real life?

If movies are immitating life, I think they are seriously over-exagerated. I just do not think life is as it is depicted in movies, and for those who are much less fortunate than other’s, I belive they would have a hard time digesting this comment as well. I think movies are purely entertainment, and have no reflection on real life, whatsoever — just my humble opinion :-)

I don’t think most movies imitate real life at all. And why would we want them too? After all, cinema is a form of escape. Whether I’m seeing something a lot better or worse than what my life is, I’m there to be entertained. While my life has moments of intrigue, I’m not sure it’d be of great interest to anyone but me!
