Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! – Some Loud Thunder
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! received a great deal of attention for their 2005 self-titled debut for being one of the few truly indie success stories without ever being signed to any label. Most bands simply can’t hack the responsibility of setting up their own gigs – and know how to keep from being charged for ice below the bleachers at Chicago Stadium – or the burdens of self-promotion and distribution.
But none of this “pat yourselves on the back, you’re a big boy now” praise wouldn’t mean much if this New York quintet wasn’t worth every moment of its do it yourself sprawl. Although this year’s follow-up Some Loud Thunder has joined with U.K. label Wichita for their overseas release, CYHSY still managed to do most of the promotional legwork along with distributing help of a Warner Brothers subsidiary.
All industry speak aside, though, this band has gone beyond just showing true promise with a gutsy angle. They’ve continued to pinpoint one of the most unique sounds in music today and aren’t likely to lose their momentum, even if they do end up in some glossy studio or featured in a car commercial.
