Clemens Gets His 350th Win

Clemens pitched the game of a much younger man last night and helped the New York Yankees beat the Minnesota Twins 5-1. With the win, Clemens joins an elite club of pitchers with 350 wins for his career. He pitched for eight innings and gave up only two hits.

Despite this milestone, the Yankees are worried. Alex Rodriguez strained a left hamstring and may end up on the 15-day disabled list. This helped temper any celebration Clemens’ win may have warranted.

“It was not good, and that’s the downer of the night,” said Clemens. “We need him.”

Clemens is the first major league pitcher to achieve 350 wins since Hall of Fame pitcher Warren Spahn of the Milwaukee Brewers accomplished the feat against the Chicago Cubs on September 29, 1963. In an interesting bit of serendipity the current manager of the Yankees, Joe Torre, was Spahn’s catcher that night.

Alex Rodriguez tripped over first baseman Justin Morneau in the sixth inning. Rodriguez had just beat out a potential double-play. He stayed in the game at the time and even advanced to second. It was then that he told third-case coach Larry Bowa that he was in some pain and probably wouldn’t be able to make it home on a single. Torre then pulled Rodriguez and he is scheduled for test on Tuesday.

“We’re going to sleep on it and see how it feels in the morning. Right now it’s just a little sore, tender,” said Rodriguez.
