Creativity is Key

In the education world, there is always the controversy over whether or not the lessons and curriculum tap into the creativity of children and allow them to explore all avenues of life. One instance that comes to mind is Science – ask many children, and they are devoid of expression or emotion when it comes to science as a whole. They may think they are not going to become a scientist, so why bother? The truth of the matter is, science is everywhere and it touches every walk of life whether it is medical, or geological, or even ecological (in some cases). I think the important factor is to find things that interest the children and let them get involved. Whatever happened to experiments? Do parents still conduct experiments at home? I think it is a great way to generate some interest in Science, and allow your child to explore the possibilities. Summer is a great time to allow your children to explore and get involved with some experiments you can conduct at home. I wrote an article earlier this month regarding science journals or moon journals; these are truly great activities to engage your children in something productive through the summer months. Regardless of what their interest may be, check out some online sites and get your kids excited with an experiment this summer. Allowing your children to explore their creative side will truly benefit them in school as well.

Right on Beth! This is a shove I needed to get my daughter more involved with educational activities over the summer. We often get caught up in work and our daily routines, hence forgetting the education of our little ones. I will take your blog as a hint. Sometimes we need a push. =-)

Hey Clint - good to hear from you :-) Yeah, okay maybe there was a subtle hint in here. But you are right, I think parents take the summer off as well, and get into this “my child is resting” routine, when the fact of the mattr is –they do get bored. My point is, find things that are educational and fun and believe me — they do exist.
