Danielson may be savior of Christian rock

For a breed of music whose main proponents have been the hackneyed glam of Carmen and topical genre-hopping of DC Talk – and what’s worse, it’s all based on the ludicrous idea that religion should possess an exclusive title on something so universal in the first place – outsiders Danielson/Danielson Famile have taken the narrow road and have created their own unmistakably singular sound and express their very conventional faith by very unconventional means.
Largely shunned from the Christian spotlight for their quirky showmanship and spirited trip-pop tunes, frontman Daniel Smith has still managed to gather a following from fans and fellow musicians alike, producing in his New Jersey studio albums for Sufjan Stevens and Ben + Vesper. Last year’s admirable record Ships even prompted a documentary released this year, Danielson: A Family Movie, or Make A Joyful Noise HERE, a chronicle of their formation and slow emergence into the indie rock scene.
