Georgetown
Georgetown, located on the north-east of Penang, is the island’s capital city. Its inhabitants are about 220, 000 or 400,000 inclusive of the suburban area. It was founded in 1786 by Francis Light. The latter was a trader for the British East India Company. Penang Island was obtained by him from the Sultan of Kedah. Francis Light built Fort Cornwallis and it became a trading post. Known as ‘‘Tanjung’’ in Malay, it has many shop houses today. Most of the inhabitants are Chinese.I used to live near Georgetown but have since moved away. It was alright but sometimes I got tired of the noise and bustle of the place. I have since moved to a quieter area at Island Park.

Wow! This city goes way back! I’m surprised it is as large as it is too, I don’t know why - - I guess I just think smaller when I think of older established cities. I love these reports, however, please keep them coming!
