Griffey Passes Robinson on Home Run List
Ken Griffey, Jr. has now passed Frank Robinson for sixth place on the career home run list. Griffey hit the home run during last night’s game against the Atlanta Braves and helped the Reds beat the Braves 10 - 3. It was Griffey’s 24th home run of the season so far.
In other news, recently-called-up pitcher Bobby Livingston went 4-for-4 with an RBI.
“That’s no fun,” said Griffey jokingly, “It just takes me out of my pinch-hitting role. They’ll call on him now.”
Griffy now has 587 homers for his career. He is 15 behind the Texas Rangers’ Sammy Sosa. His homer last night gave the Reds a 1 - 0 lead in the first inning.
As for Livingston, he was called up from Triple-A Louisville. He allowed eight hits, two runs and two walks in five innings. He also struck out four.
“My change up was working and my sinker,” said Livingston. “I made some pitches when I needed to.”
The Reds had lost three of four games during its current 10-game road trip.
“The most important things it that we got the win,” said Griffey. “That’s something we haven’t done a lot in the second half.”
Atlanta had been doing well until last night’s game. They ended the game having stranded 11 runners. One of their players was even thrown out for arguing a called third strike with the umpire. The Braves also racked up errors from first baseman Scott Thorman and second baseman Yunel Escobar.
