Hooking Up - Then and Now

The term “hooking up” has been used in the dating world for decades. Once upon a time, it was used in reference to ‘making out’ – finding a secluded spot to kiss and enjoy some over-the-clothes action. But somewhere along the line, the definition has become blurred to the point where it could mean many things to different people. The general consensus nowadays is that “hooking up” applies to two people seeking a casual encounter, almost always including sex.

The younger generation has embraced the trend of hooking up, but sexual health professionals are concerned that this behavior could do major damage to a young person’s body as well as their psyche. The dangers of hooking up do not only affect women - men are also at risk of low self-esteem, depression and poor preparation for serious adult relationships. Laura Sessions Stepp, author of “Unhooked” and a writer for The Washington Post, suggests that women in particular are attracted to the idea of taking control in a hook-up, but that they are mistaking freedom for empowerment.

I hear ya. This phrase is definitely tossed around differently, but tends to mean sex amongst younger crowds. Personally, I think far too many people regard sex as a casual thing, when it really shouldn’t be. Especially not with all the STDs out there now days. Just because you can do it, doesn’t mean you should. People need to think hard before they act. Everything affects your future to some degree. Just my two cents.

Interesting! I know terminology has definitely changed over the year’s, and our youth have a language all there own, in many instances. This brings a whole new light to the term, “hooking up,” I guess this is another one of those terms I was not too familiar with :-) (Oy to keep up!!!)

Gee, I feel old! Like Beth, I didn’t realize most people used the term “hooking up” in a casual sexual context. It does make me sad when I hear that young people are “embracing” a trend which could clearly do them more harm than good, both physically and emotionally.
