How to Recognize Online Dating Scams

The Internet can be a great way to meet new people and possibly start a new relationship. Regrettably, the Internet is also a way to come across several con artists. If choosing to date online, be cautious and be alert to potential danger signs.

1. Asks for Money – If your online boyfriend or girlfriends emails you with a sob story and asks for money, don’t send it. One of the biggest online dating scams is your online companion asking for funds to handle an emergency expense, or to come and visit you. In many instances, once you send the money, you’ll never hear from the person again.

2. Sends a Beautiful Photo
– It’s easy for your online companion to describe him or herself as a stunning model. If the person sends a striking photo via email or mail, be leery. The person can easily scan a picture from a magazine.

3. Companion Forgets Conversations
– It is common for a person to date several people online. If you ask your companion a question, but never receive a response, or your companion forgets your personal information or details of a previous discussion, he or she is likely balancing multiple online relationships.

Yes, this is great information to bring to the population. While I am not single, therefore, online dating is not applicable to me, but I do have teen agers, and I would hate to see them taken advantage of. I think the key is, you need to be cautious. Even if you do find a reputable site, there is no guarantee the person you are communicating with is who they claim to be!

Online dating is kind of pathetic anyway.

These are great tips. It’s wonderful to see online dating getting some attention here, as it really is the way so many people connect these days (myself included - that’s how I met my husband!). However, there are certainly things to watch out for as it’s a bit easier for people to claim to be something they’re not when you aren’t face to face.
