Let’s face it; today’s school arrangement consists of large classes. Gaining the attention of the student can be a challenge, especially when two or more begin talking amongst themselves and involving other students. Younger children tend to get bored easily, and keeping their attention can be a challenge. Sometimes gaining their attention is a challenge in and of itself, and therefore, we must arm ourselves with tips, tricks of the trade, and methods to improve listening skills of our student’s. If we had to raise our voice every time a situation got out of hand, we would not have any voice left. So we must work on getting their attention, and keeping it without raising our voice. One way to accomplish this sometimes daunting task is to improve listening skills. There are many ways to accomplish this, and EdHelper.com is a great site, with lots of good tools to assist. For instance, riddles – the student will have to listen to your clues and respond to you verbally. If they aren’t listening, they can’t participate so it encourages good listening skills. We can also vary our inflections to assist in their listening comprehension skills. Repetition is a skill often utilized in the elementary classes, and this is a benefit in developing listening skills as well. By asking questions, and having the student repeat the information, they have to listen. You can make a game of it, and create an element of fun as well.
