Lonelyplanet.com: A great resource

Budget travel is a fine science. You need to know which resources to use, and it doesn’t hurt to have a local’s insight on where to stay and what to do. Since you may not have a friend in every city and you may not know where to start, Lonely Planet’s website maybe a place to start.

Lonely Planet puts out s set of guides for tourists. While many only think of Lonely Planet as a resource for overseas travel (or for people from overseas coming here) it is a really great source for all travelers. They have wonderful search engines, and even some limited destination guides (of course for the full write up you will need to buy the guides). The other side of the Lonely Planet website are the bulletin boards known as the Thorntree.

Here you can do research on your destination via the boards. You can search for the information you want. If you cannot find what you are looking for, you can post the question yourself. You just have to register. Registration is free, and the information you can gather is priceless at times. Locals and former tourists (well with internet cafes even current tourists) can weigh in on your questions. They can give you suggestions on how to find the best deal, and where are the true must sees. Be careful though. The boards can be a little addicting. The next thing you know you are one of the regulars and going to get togethers.
