Originality in Cinema

I often feel like today’s films lack originality. I don’t care to see more and more television shows and cartoons made into feature length films. Hollywood is likely going with ideas that have worked in the past, but it’s much more exciting, at least in my opinion, to see an original spec script get made. At least if it is an ORIGINAL idea. Sadly, big producers are likely to continue on their generic path with re-makes, video games turned into features, and of course novels converted to film. One thing I’ve come to expect with the novel conversions is the countless individuals ranting about how the book was a lot better. Big surprise there!

Check out some independent films. Hollywood will always put on drek.

Yes, film is lacking originality! You mentioned t.v. shows being turned into film. There seems to be a rash of comics hitting the big screen as well. We’ve seen the Hulk, Fantastic 4, and Spiderman — just to name a few. I’m tired of seeing the comics on the big screen. I wish Hollywood would move on. Just my humble opinion.

I agree! Hollywood is starving for originality! I understand that old-school comics are huge, but don’t care to see them on the big screen much either. But…… “Ghost Rider” is another one out, and I heard they were doing “Wonder Woman” at some point in the future. Gees…it’s never-ending!

I think we only have to look at how many sequels are being released this year to know you’re absolutely right. I agree with Josh - there are so many fantastic independent films released too. While you may have to hunt for them at the video store, they have all the intelligently written scripts and original characters you could want. Don’t forget the world of foreign cinema either - there’s some really interesting stuff coming out of France, Spain, Australia and the UK.
