Rocking Rod Marries Model Number Three

June 18th, 2007

It’s wife number three for Rod Stewart, who married his long-time flame, model Penny Lancaster, in Italy last weekend.

The couple’s nuptials were uncharacteristically low-key. The pair enjoyed a private ceremony in a medieval abbey, witnessed by 100 of their family members and closest friends. The gathering then enjoyed a night of good food, dancing and fireworks in nearby Santa Margherita.

Lancaster wore a short, white satin dress and matching high heels. Her groom donned blue pinstriped trousers and a white jacket.

62-year-old Stewart and his 36-year-old wife are now enjoying a Mediterranean honeymoon on Stewart’s luxury yacht, The Lady Ann Magee.

Summer Wedding Guide

June 12th, 2007

If it’s June, it must be wedding season, and your invitations are probably already stacking up in the mail. No one wants to miss a wedding, but with summer airfares, gas prices, and hotel fees (not to mention the gifts!), it can get a bit expensive. To make sure you look fabulous at each event without breaking the bank, follow these easy tips and watch your summer wedding style sizzle.

Chances are, you’ve already got one or two fierce frocks in your closet from seasons past. If it’s a day wedding, you’re allowed more freedom with your wardrobe picks; however, it’s traditionally bad manners to wear white to a wedding that isn’t yours. Stealing the bride’s thunder is just tacky.

Nighttime weddings are usually a bit dressier, but unless the invite says black tie, long gowns are probably over the top. Find a dress with a bit of sparkle to give your look a little more luxe without having to spend a fortune.

If you’ve got several weddings lined up this summer, you’ll want to have a fresh look for each. Instead of buying a new outfit everytime you toast the new couple, experiment with something you already have.

Pick a basic dress (patterns or bold prints will be too obvious) and let your imagination run wild. Accessories are key: switch up makeup, hairstyles, bags, shoes, jewelry…the possibilities are endless! A belt worn around the waist or just under your bustline will add unique pizzaz to a tired-out look. The next time, top off your frock with a snazzy blazer or cardigan and different jewelry to spice things up.

If only picking out the wedding gift was this easy…

Keep cool in summer black

June 6th, 2007

Even though the temperature’s rising, you don’t have to give up basic black. Keep cool
this summer in the shadowy hue by remembering these simple hints:

1. Keep it light. Choose airy fabrics like cotton, silk or jersey and forego heavy threads like wool, velvet and leather.

2. Short ‘n’ sweet. If you’re going to wear black, hemlines are best kept short. Floor-skimming dresses and skirts will envelope you in the beating sun, but shorter
lengths snap against smooth summer legs. Pants are still okay, but avoid anything
baggy that carries too much weight.

3. Go strappy. Black is heavy enough in the summertime, and you don’t need clunky
platforms making you even more tired. Try strappy sandals in flats or heels. Metallic
shades in silver or gold pop against the subdued shade.

4. Remember the attitude. Why wear black if you don’t come off a bit mysterious?

Oscar, Proenza Schouler take top prize at CFDA Awards

June 6th, 2007

The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Awards celebrated its 25th anniversary Monday night, honoring fashion giants and newbies alike.

Ralph Lauren received the council’s first-ever American Fashion Legend Award, a not-too-shabby nod to the creative genius and quality-driven man who has helped American fashion remain in the big leagues with its flashier, and perhaps more accredited, European counterparts.

The top award (think Best Picture at the Academy Awards) went to another icon, Oscar de la Renta, and to Lorenza Hernandez and Jack McCollough for Proenza Schouler, fashion’s “It boys,” as coined by Vogue, along with Marc Jacobs. The unlikely pairing of winners for the coveted Womenswear Designer of the Year award celebrated both the luxurious, glam-but-sophisticated styles and indie-loving, understated, sexycool looks that today’s women crave. Oscar’s leading ladies include Laura Bush, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Penelope Cruz, while Proenza Schouler dresses Kate Bosworth, Molly Sims, and anyone who shops at Target (their Proenza Schouler for Target line hit stores this spring).

For its silver anniversary, the CFDA Awards went above and beyond to prove that fashion, after all, is what makes you feel good, whatever your style.

Boho’s back…with a sharper style.

June 5th, 2007

When ex-boho queen Sienna Miller hung up her floppy beach hat, the fashion world followed. The trend-setting starlet, armed with a league of influential fashion houses like Chloe and Missoni, suddenly turned mod. Minimalist retro choices like short shifts and stacked heels flooded every fashionista’s closet, pushing out peasant skirts and threadbare handbags for what seemed like forever.

As with every seismic fashion shift, the overly 60s mod look has found its harmony. Laid back, more free-spirited pieces are finding their way back into the wardrobes of the twenty-first century, thanks to looks by Miguelina, Tricia Fix, and the uber romantic Louis Vuitton.

But before you pull out that floppy hat, here are a few tips for updating that boho style, and creating a look that’s more fashion than flower child.

Pair a loose-fitting tunic in a wild pattern with skinny jeans. The slim bottom balances out the volume on top, and besides, have you ever seen a hippie in skinny?

Skip the heavy jewelry. Simple earrings or a clavicle-skimming pendant are OK, but pass on the bangles and layered necklaces. This year’s look is cleaner and more ladylike.

Long dresses look best if they show some skin on top. Choose a halter or strapless version, pull your hair back and keep makeup clean and fresh. Otherwise it’s just too much.

When the weather cools down, pull on a pair of black or gray tights under those drapey duds. Slip on some sleek platforms and rock the best of your past…and present.

White done right

June 4th, 2007

Ready, set, go: from now until Labor Day (if you’re a rules girl) white below the waist is finally appropriate. Wearing white on your lower half can be a mite tricky, so here are a few tips for looking (and feeling) white hot.

1. Don’t overdo it. If you’re wearing a white dress, nix the matching shoes. Try metallic sandals or flats. White pants with white tops are also a little ridiculous: you don’t want to blind your friends in the sun. If you’re feeling lazy, remember that the rules are the same as wearing black: anything matches.

2. Don’t wear your white too tight. The neutral shade is already a little see-through, and if your pants or shorts are too tight, you’ll have an even harder time keeping yourself covered.

3. Wear appropriate lingerie. White or beige underwear won’t stand out, and if your dress is transparent, wear a slip. You may have great legs, but no one wants to see that far up. At least not at a family BBQ.

Ease into fall fashion early

June 4th, 2007

It’s summer, and you know what that means: time to get a head start on fall fashion. Even though the weather’s warming up, summer is a great time to play with layering. By the time fall rolls around, you’ll already be a pro.

Experiment with chunky knits. The comfiest way to keep warm, oversized sweaters will be your best bet for fall. To stay cool during the summer, try a cropped version in beige or pale pink. Wear with everything from floaty summer frocks to shorts and tees. They’re great for stashing in your tote for a cool evening or frigid air conditioned buildings.

Tights are another cold weather favorite, not just for their added warmth, but also for the unpredictable ways they liven up your everyday outfits. Pull out your leggings this summer for a breezier alternative to jeans. Tunics and dresses will keep you covered but cool and will give you more layering options for when the mercury drops. Instead of basic black, try gray or even plum-colored leggings for an extra fashion forward step towards fall.

Jury’s still out on high-waisted jeans

May 30th, 2007

As it often is with trends, one extreme is quickly followed by its opposite. Fashion is steering away from the super low-cut jean (thank God), but its replacement isn’t much more appealing. Mischa Barton has been wearing high-waisted jeans with tucked-in vintage tees all spring, but the look hasn’t won me over just yet. The snug fit is too tight in the crotch, creates a strange, stretched-out backside, and is unforgiving for thighs. High waists do equal longer looking legs, but denim isn’t the way to do it.

Dressy trousers are a flattering way to ease into the high-waisted trend. Choose a looser fit in a lighter material that doesn’t hug your naughty bits they way denim can. Stay away from pleated fronts and tuck in your blouse or a simple tank for a polished, professional look. A thin belt will also keep the style less dramatic and more classic.

Sailor-inspired chinos are another alternative to super high jeans. Sailor styles generally sit a little higher on the waist but still have appropriate inseam lengths. Tuck in your tank for a modern look or wear a feminine blouse to balance out the nautical trend.

All wrapped up

May 30th, 2007

As unlikely as it may be, the one summer staple you’ll be glad you packed is a good pashmina or shawl. If it’s hot and sticky outside, it’s almost a guarantee that the air conditioning is going full-blast inside.

Who hasn’t been caught freezing in their summer frock in a restaurant, on a boat ride, or on the plane? Whether you’re fighting with your man over the A/C controls on your way to a fabulous getaway or you catch a chill on the beach with friends, you’re going to want a pretty way to cover up and keep warm.

Cardigans are cute, but wrapping your shoulders in an oversized scarf is an instant way to be chic and luxurious anywhere. Even if your pashmina isn’t made from expensive cashmere, you’ll look (and feel!) as glamorous as you will cozy.
