The New Diet Coke Plus

If you’re a Diet Coke fan, you might have heard of the new Diet Coke Plus that has vitamins, minerals and a cute, colorful logo. The taste is very similar to Diet Coke; perhaps only a hard core fan can tell the subtle difference. Perhaps it is supposed to make you feel better for drinking something healthy and try to get some of V8’s market share, but I doubt seeing that happen.

Diet Coke Plus claims to provide 15% of your daily requirements of Niacin, Vitamin B6 and B12 and 10% of zinc and magnesium. However, soda is soda and it has the same sodium content as the ‘regular’ Diet Coke. It also says on the can that it is not a significant source of Vitamin A, C, calcium or iron. If you like Diet drinks and want to have a few vitamins at the same time - then try it - you won’t need to acquire a new taste.

However, if you’re looking for a health drink, look elsewhere.

I agree with you! Soda is soda! I understand why diet coke did this, but it’s only a ruse because the benefits of the few vitamins and minerals do not hold a candle to the negative effects of the caffeine, sodium, and other artificial ingredients. Nice try, Coke!

I guess if you’re going to drink soft drink anyway, it’d be nice to get a few extra vitamins and benefits. But at the end of the day, we don’t drink Coke for health - we drink it because it tastes good! And to that end, I’d much rather drink fat Coke than the diet option.

I just tried this yesterday and it tastes exactly like regular Diet Coke to me. I don’t usually drink soda, though, so I guess I’m not an expert on taste. The B-complex route was an interesting one to take… the B’s tend to be associated with increased energy from foods, but Coke doesn’t market it as an energy thing. I’m not suprised that they jumped on the functional food bandwagon, though. It’s getting bigger and bigger and although there are FDA regulations, some companies are making some crazy claims!
