Thomas Hits 500, Jays Still Lose to Twins
Slugger Frank Thomas joined an elite club in major league baseball, he hit his 500th home run last night against the Minnesota Twins. Despite this, the Blue Jays still lost to the Twins 8 - 5.
The rest of the night did not go so well for Thomas after he hit his home run in the first inning. Later in the game Thomas disputed the home plate umpire’s calling of balls and strikes. This arguing got him thrown out of the game.
“I’m probably the first to get 500 home runs and get thrown out of the ballgame,” he said, “That’s something I didn’t want to happen, but the moment just got the best of me.”
Thomas hit a three-run homer in the first inning off of Carlos Silva. He waited until the ninth inning before arguing and getting thrown out of the game. Thomas also managed to get an RBI double and tied his season high with four RBIs.
Torii Hunter and Jason Barlett also hit home runs, but much of it was unnoticed by the crowd after the 500th home run.
“You can’t upstage 500 home runs. It’s hard to do. I’ll be lucky if I hit 300,” said Hunter. Hunter has 181 so far for his career.
