What is a Copywriter?

According to Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia, “copywriting is the process of writing the words that promote a person, business, opinion, or idea.” Therefore, a copywriter is the person who actually writes these words.

In reality, we are all copywriters to some extent. Every time you have ever written a letter or email attempting to convince someone to do something, you have participated in the act of copywriting. It is a medium where persuasion is key and the ultimate goal is to convince somebody to do or believe something.

Even the simple act of writing a Web site is a form of copywriting. The goal of many Web sites is to sell a product or business. The only way to do this is to convince readers that the product or business being promoted is the best one out there. Otherwise they will go to the competition.

A trained and skillful copywriter can help any business accomplish greater results with everything from internal company correspondence to all forms of multi-media advertising.

I agree, the use of a copywriter who is trained and knowledgeable in his/her field, is the way to go. There is power in language, and for those who know how to write and convey a messsage, or meaning — it is indeed an art form, a talent and a benefit to business.

I wish this was indicative of reality. Unfortunately, with all my professional and educational background, this is as close to a paid copywriting position as I will ever have.
